TOEFL
For purposes of admission, your most recent score must be at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT), and 570 for the paper-based format (PBT). Please contact individual academic departments for more information, as they may choose to require a higher score.
The IBT emphasizes integrated skills so its format and scoring are different from the PBT version of the TOEFL. Please plan to take the TOEFL as soon as possible, regardless of the test’s format, to avoid delays in the review of your application.
IELTS
As an exception, you can submit scores from the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP:IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
You are responsible for providing us with an official Test Report Form (TRF) of your IELTS. Remember to order the TRF when you register to take the test. For Fall 2018, tests taken before June 1, 2015 will not be accepted. Your most recent overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale.
GRE
Most departments, schools, and groups require applicants to take a standardized test such as the GRE General Test, a GRE Subject Test, the GMAT or MCAT. Consult the department to which you are applying for the department’s requirements. To send an official score to Berkeley, list the institution code assigned by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for Berkeley, 4833. In addition, list the ETS code for the department to which you are applying. If more than one department code might be appropriate, check the department’s instructions on which code to use.

PS
The statement of purpose should convince readers– the faculty on the selection committee– that you have solid achievements behind you that show promise for your success in graduate study. Think of the statement of purpose as a composition with four different parts.
GPA
A satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale
Fee
You must submit an application fee when you apply. The application fee is not re-fundable. If you are a U.S. citizen or current permanent resident, the application fee is $105; for all others, the fee is $125.
RL
Three letters of recommendation are required. You will be asked to submit the names of your recommenders and valid email addresses as part of the on-line application. The admissions system will contact them directly, and you will be able to check whether their letters have been added to the application. Please give your recommenders plenty of advanced notification for submitting their letters so that they may be submitted by the deadline.
Transcript
Copies of all relevant official transcripts from all university/college level institutions attended (this requirement applies to both domestic and international applicants) must be submitted/uploaded with your on-line Graduate Application for Admissions and Fellowships. Transcripts in a language other than English must be accompanied by official English translations, as described in the "International Applicants" section of the Graduate Division's Admissions Requirements (link is external). Note: Submission of official/sealed transcripts will only be required if you are admitted to the program and you accept the offer of admission.
